Baby Development - 1st month
Your Baby’s 1st Month:
Alertness
Tremendous changes will occur in the first month of your baby’s life. Within a matter of weeks, you will begin noticing that he is more alert. He will begin looking intently at faces and may even be able to follow a moving object with his eyes.
Head Movement
By two weeks of age, your baby may be able to lift his head when he’s
placed on his stomach. This movement will help strengthen the muscles that
will support his head while sitting up, crawling, and later walking. By
the end of the first month, he might even be able to briefly turn his head
from side to side.
Improved Hearing
At about four weeks, your baby’s hearing will be completely developed.
However, it will take quite a bit longer before he fully understands everything.
Most babies pay close attention to human vocalization, and prefer higher
pitched voices than those with lower tones. Make sure to expose your baby
to a variety of different sounds and music. As well, it’s not too
early to begin reading to him. Nursery rhymes and bedtime stories will soon
be some of his favorites. If you are concerned that your baby may have hearing
difficulties, try clapping your hands behind his head. If he startles, he
can hear sounds. If he does not, you should consult your pediatrician.
Social Skills
By the end of the month, most babies begin to smile and coo. Some babies
will even develop the ability to laugh at this early age. Many parents first
notice these first smiles and giggles while their baby is sleeping, but
quickly they will be happening when awake.
